Sydney rings in the dragon
Sydney's celebration of the Chinese New Year kicked off on the weekend in a flurry of dumplings, hot-and-sour noodles, and special cold dishes.
One weekend highlight saw MasterChef Australia 2010 winner Adam Liaw come face-to-face with Wenfu Zeng, a chef from an infamous Chinese restaurant chain called Tanyoto.
Tanyoto - which is based in the famous foodie city, Chengdu - has been serving spicy Sichuan hot pot for
more than 15 years.
It now has more than 100 restaurants across China,
Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
Liaw was given 10 minutes to prepare raw lobster Yee Sang, a traditional
Chinese New Year dish, while Zeng showcased hot and sour sweet potato vermicelli, a Tanyoto signature dish.
More events for Sydneysiders continue on after last weekend's events in aid of bringing in the year of the dragon.
One tour on February 1 is hosted by journalist and food writer, John Newton, and Chinatown artist and tea merchant, Raymond Leung.
The tour of Chinatown, starting with a Chinese breakfast, will show attendants this fascinating district, now home to other foodie destinations including Thai Town and a small Uighur population from north-west China.
Later this week is also a unique degustation of authentic Chinese teas, served traditionally by experts, in a journey into the delights and nuances of tea drinking.
And then again on February 1 is a free event on Chinese cuisine with Dr Richard Wu, contributor to the SBS Food Lovers’
Guide to Australia, the(sydney)magazine and a satellite TV cooking show.
