Mobile cafe chain goes nationwide
Victoria-based café on wheels concept Tasty Trucks has begun an Australia-wide expansion with the acquisition of a New South Wales business.

Tasty Trucks Founder Colin Lear said the company has purchased Lunch Express in Newcastle which has 17 vans offering a similar service.

The deal comes just three months after Tasty Trucks launched its franchise system, dubbed 'vanchising'.

Tasty Trucks' existing 64-van network serves more than 15,000 meals each day throughout the south-east and west of Victoria.

Lear says over the next 12 months, Lunch Express systems, processes, vans and products will mirror those of Tasty Trucks and Tasty Trucks vans will eventually replace the existing Lunch Express vans. There are plans to continue to grow the brand throughout NSW.

Lear said that he expects to add another 20 vans in NSW and Victoria over the next 12 months.

"In addition, we will continue to look at acquisitions in other states of Australia in a bid to realise our goal of becoming a national brand," Lear said.

"We are confident that after 30 years in the business, we have the best product of its kind in the country, both from a service offering to the consumer, as well as business opportunity."

The development of the concept has come a long way from its beginnings in 1979 when Lear purchased his first mobile food van in Blackburn.

Ten years later and with six mobile food vans, Colin sold that business and began the empire he had always dreamed about - Tasty Trucks.

Post merger, Tasty Trucks will employ more than 200 people, boasts 81 vans, has food processing, production-line facilities in Ferntree Gully and Newcastle and a distribution depot in Tullamarine.
