Cake bake for sweet cause
Young parents, children and adorable chocolate cake-mix covered toddlers helped launch a new initiative by the Australian Red Cross this week - a month long event which aims to raise funds for disadvantaged people through the joy of baking.

The charity is urging Aussies to open their kitchens this October and fill them with the delicious aroma of homemade cakes and baking delights for its Big Cake Bake fundraiser.

The Red Cross says it is "a simple, fun and social fundraising event which encourages Australians to come together and share the experience of baking in their workplaces, schools and social groups".

Whilst calorie wise they mightn't necessarily be guilt free, from a ethical standpoint, at least, the cakes are: all funds raised help those in need including some of the most vulnerable families across Australia and overseas.

In celebration of its launch this week, a baking event was held in Sydney for some of the families from the Red Cross Young Parents Program - a program that helps young parents develop the skills needed to parent independently through education and volunteer support.

One of the graduates of Red Cross Young Parents Program, Liana, shared about her past mistakes and eagerness to learn from them, so that she and her little daughter can have a better life than previous generations of women in the family.

Her mum, grandma and great-grandma all had children taken from them, with Liana now determined to break that cycle.

“That’s why the Young Parents Program is so important, because it teaches people like me the skills to parent properly and helps find a proper home for me and my child,” said Liana.

The Big Cake Bake is fronted by Red Cross ambassador and Aussie icon Megan Gale, along with many other Australian celebrities including Kate Ritchie, Maggie Beer, Bill Granger, Stephanie Alexander, Josh Thomas, Amanda Keller and Nathan Hindmarsh - many of whom have submitted recipes on the charity event's website.

Community members who register and raise a minimum of $100 in donations will also have the chance to win a return trip for two to Tokyo to dine in Bill Granger’s restaurant, bills Odaiba.
